Strategy games that stay open until the last turn.

Last Turn Studio makes short turn-based strategy games for phones. No runaway leaders and no long mop-up: the ground you hold pays every turn, so the game is still a fight when the final round comes.

Fronthold

Our first game: a pocket strategy game about holding ground.

Buy, move and fight across small maps in games of 15 to 20 minutes against the AI. Lead Britain, Germany, the Soviet Union, the United States or Japan through skirmishes and short campaigns, with dice battles where you choose your losses and when to retreat.

In closed testing on Android.

What we set out to fix

Fronthold comes from the line of Risk and Axis & Allies. Those games share four habits, and we design against each one.

The leader runs away with it.
Every territory you hold pays at the start of your turn, so a grab only pays if it survives the reply. Ground changes hands, and the lead goes with it.
The opening plays itself.
Every territory is worth something from the first turn, so there is ground worth taking and ground worth holding before a shot is fired.
The ending is settled long before it ends.
Objectives score every turn you hold them, right through the final round, and a captured capital ends the game at once. The last turn can still turn it.
Units are only bigger numbers.
Tanks drive through empty land, artillery lifts the infantry beside it, submarines strike first unless a destroyer is near. Each unit adds a decision.

How we work

A small independent studio. We would rather ship one game that is fair and finishes well than three that don't.

  • Rules you can trust

The rules run in one tested engine. Any change to what a rule answers is checked against recorded games before it ships.

  • An opponent that plays fair

The AI plans a whole turn ahead and judges each plan by playing it out. It never peeks at the dice and knows nothing special about any nation.

  • Balance by measurement

Head starts and map changes are measured over batches of AI-against-AI games, then measured again whenever a rule moves.

  • Phones first

Every screen is checked in portrait and landscape at three text sizes, and a game fits in a coffee break.
